Every device we receive follows a carefully managed process. Here's what actually happens between the moment we collect it and the moment its value is fully recovered.
It's easy to say "we manage the whole lifecycle." It's harder to show it. So this is the walkthrough — the eight steps every asset moves through once it's in our hands, and why each one exists.
The thread running through all of it is the same: maximise value, maintain complete chain of custody, and give organisations something they can actually evidence at the end. Reduced waste, stronger ESG outcomes, and more value recovered from technology that's reached the end of its first life.
1. Collection
It starts on your site, with our very own Vortex Smart Hands secure logistics specialists — not another subcontractor.
We own our fleet and we employ our drivers, which means the people arriving to collect your assets are ours. Where equipment needs to come out of a rack, a room or a building first, we handle the de-installation too. Nothing gets handed to a third party you've never met and can't vouch for.
That single decision — owning the collection rather than outsourcing it — is what makes everything after it possible.
2. Secure transport
The moment an asset leaves your site is the moment most chain-of-custody claims quietly fall apart. Assets change hands, sit in a yard overnight, get consolidated with someone else's load.
Not here. Because it's our fleet and our drivers moving your equipment, custody never breaks in transit. Your assets and your data stay secure for the entire journey — and, as a by-product of running our own efficient logistics, at a lower carbon cost than a fragmented multi-carrier route.
3. Asset tracking
Everything is tracked in real time, giving you 100% chain of custody from collection through to final recovery.
This isn't a certificate that turns up weeks later with numbers nobody can trace. It's live visibility into where your assets are and what's happening to them — the accountability and traceability that governance teams need, and the audit trail that stands up when someone asks you to prove it.
4. Data sanitisation
Before anything else happens to a device, the data comes off it — securely and verifiably.
Data destruction is the non-negotiable first step of processing, carried out to recognised standards so you're protected the moment your equipment is in our care. On-site destruction is available as part of collection where the sensitivity of the data demands it. Either way, no asset moves further down the line until it's been sanitised.
5. Testing
With data removed, each device is assessed properly: tested, graded and segregated.
This is the point where an asset's future gets decided. Testing and grading tell us what's viable for reuse, what needs repair, and what has reached the genuine end of its usable life. Segregation then routes each item down the right path — no guesswork, no everything-in-one-bin shortcut that destroys recoverable value.
6. Refurbishment
Assets that can live again, do.
Restoration and repair extend asset life and unlock value that would otherwise be written off. This is the heart of the circular model — the step that turns a disposal problem into a recovery opportunity, and equipment you'd written down into something with real market worth.
7. Remarketing
A refurbished asset is only worth what someone will pay for it — and finding that someone is a network problem, not a warehouse problem.
Our contacts and channels across the circular tech industry are what unlock a second life for viable assets and release the value tied up in them. That plays out through takeback and revenue share, buyback and trade-in, resale, trading and e-commerce — the routes that put recovered value back into your business rather than leaving it stranded.
8. Responsible recycling
Not every asset can be reused — and that's where a lot of providers cut corners. We don't.
Where reuse isn't viable, we maximise recovery of the components and materials inside: parts and component harvesting, bulk recycling, sortation, precious metal recovery and rare earth material recovery. Valuable resources are kept in circulation and out of landfill. Recovery first. Landfill isn't part of the plan.
